Anomalies & Curiosities

Underwater Sculpture Installation

This eerie, underwater sculpture installation called, "Permanent Evolution" engages people - and attracts coral, fish, lobsters and algae. The artist's intent is that the installation will, over time, evolve into an artificial reef that will help bolster dwindling natural coral reefs. I love the idea that, the more nature settles in here, the less the human forms can be seen.

Fabulous photos here.

French Zombies and Whatnot

This library of free images from French Paper is great fun to browse - from retro zombie illustrations to weird ad art. They're free to download, so long as you use them on French Paper stock... Heck, that's worth a ream or two!

Shorpy Inspiration

I discovered Shorpy.com a while back, when they started following our Abandoned app tweets. It's a curated, crowd-sourced archive of high resolution, historical photography. If you haven't already seen it, check it out - it's a fascinating collection - from sepia moments of ephemera, to color Kodachromes from WWII. It's great fun just to browse... I like to look at it for design and typography inspiration. Just search any random keyword and settle in for something interesting.

They've also added a neat little collection of iPhone Wallpapers comprised of some of the images from their archive - from an iconic iron worker to a 40s farmer, replete with heroic up-lighting.

Place in Time

Love this concept - "What Was There" is a free, crowd-sourced iPhone app that lets you view contextual photo overlays of the people, places and things that were once, well, wherever you happen to be standing.

The group behind the app hopes that "together we can build a history of the world". Hope they've got a lot of server space.

There's also a website where you can browse the content, though not as compelling as the mobile version.

Outmatched

My armadillo is substantially outmatched.

Great Lakes Theater campaign rolling out.

We've been designing a brand new look and feel for Great Lakes Theater's 2011-2012 season. We were delighted when, walking downtown, we happened to bump into Todd Krispinksy while he and his GLT crew were hanging these lovely new season banners in the windows at PlayhouseSquare. We just love watching a campaign come together!

Other elements of the campaign will be rolled out throughout the year, including season brochures, posters, mailers, ads, signage, and a super cool new website.

A cool century of design and technology.

Stumbled upon Google's fully browsable archive of Popular Mechanics Magazines for the entire 20th century. It's truly fascinating and delightful -- as a typography and illustration specimen, and a mind-blowing study of the progress of 20th century technology.

Happy Cinco de Josh's Birthday!

Banksy and Star Wars in one? Yeah, we recognize the perfect Josh gift when we see it. :)

What's The Low Down?

If FORM were a person, this would be a little peek into its brain. Cool things. Random thoughts. Even the silly and stupid stuff. Only without all the icky gooey bits.
